Casey Johnson of Edgerton, Wisconsin, won Round Two of the Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge at Madison tonight. Ryan Goldade of Edgerton, Wisconsin, won the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman while Brian Beale of Franklin, Wisconsin, won the Pellitterri Waste Systems Bandits feature. Jed Buchholz of McFarland, Wisconsin, won the 6Shooter race.
Casey Johnson Takes Home the Checkered Flag
Casey Johnson won the 50 lap feature for the Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge.
Dean LaPointe and John Beale brought the seventeen car field to the green flag with Beale taking the early lead before the caution came out on lap 2 when several cars got together coming out of turn one. Several cars went to the pits and were able to return except for Kelsey Dassow’s car that had front end damage.
On the restart it looked like the car of Bobby Wilberg had been shot out of a cannon as he leaped to the lead with Paul Shafer Jr. several car lengths behind in second. Another caution came out on lap 5, but Wilberg had no trouble getting back out to the lead on the restart. On lap 6 Johnson broke into the top five when he passed Dale Nottestad. One lap later he was to second after working his way past both Jeremy Miller and Shafer Jr.
On lap 17 Miller moved up to third while Wilberg continued his leading ways. A distant second, Johnson began reeling in the leader lap by lap and on lap 22 was right up on Wilberg’s rear bumper.
Johnson patiently waited for the right opportunity and found it on lap 23 when he worked to the inside of Wilberg and made the past for the lead coming out of turn three.
It looked like smooth sailing for Johnson until lap 33 when a car stalled on the track while making an attempt to exit to the pits. Johnson continued to lead after the restart with Miller up to second followed by Wilberg, Rich Bickle, and Shafer Jr.
On lap 37 Bickle was able to move past Wilberg for third, but neither Bickle or Miller would have enough to catch Johnson as the race stayed green the rest of the way. Miller finished second followed by Bickle, Wilberg, and Shafer Jr.
“It was a little nerve racking out there,” said Johnson as he talked about working his way up to the lead. “The guys worked really hard on the car this week to get it ready. I really have to thank Bruce Lee and my dad.”
Miller set fast time with a lap of 17.471 with Jeff Storm winning the B and B Lawncare Dash with heat wins going to Storm, Bickle, and Caleb Adrian.
The point leader going into the night, Ty Majeski had major mechanical issues during the Dash and was unable to start the heat or feature. Miller is the new point leader with 204 followed by Shafer Jr. (195), Storm (172), Feiler (165), and Feiler (148).
It’s Back to Victory Lane for Ryan Goldade
After having mechanical issues in his last race, Ryan Goldade was able to make another visit to victory lane after winning the 20 lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman.
Steve Anderson led the first twelve laps while Goldade and Robert Hansberry were fighting it out for second place. Anderson had built up a multi-car length advantage, but by lap 10 his lead was starting to vanish as Goldade was up to apply pressure. On lap 13 both Goldade and Hansberry were able to get inside of Anderson going into turn three and took over the top two spots while coming out of turn four.
A caution on lap 14 for a spin set up a restart, but Goldade was able to maintain his lead despite the best efforts of Hansberry. In the end it was Goldade winning by 0.269 seconds over Hansberry followed by Anderson, Lundberg, and Darrell Garman.
“I love racing with Robert,” said Goldade, “He races me clean and I was able to hold him off. We made it work tonight after having trouble a couple of weeks ago.”
Goldade set fast time with a lap of 20.326 with Anderson winning the First Supply Dash and the heat race.
Beale Wheels to Victory
Brian Beale made the most of his first race at Madison this season by picking up the 20 lap feature for the Bandits.
McKayla Adams and Cade Watters brought the eleven car field to the green flag, but it was Beale coming from the outside of row three to grab the lead coming out of turn four on the first lap.
On lap 3 Nick Schmidt was up to second place followed by Steve Dickson and David Schmidt. But Beale had quickly built up a sizeable advantage over the field and the best anyone could hope for was a caution flag.
Two cautions did come out on lap 14 and 17, but each time Beale was able to easily maintain his lead. Dickson was able to hold off point leader Dan Snyder for second with David Schmidt taking home fourth place just ahead of Nick Schmidt.
“It was a great night. We had some trouble earlier with the car, but got things figured out,” said Beale.
Brandon DeLacy set fast time with a lap of 15.182 with David Schmidt winning the First Supply Dash while Jovanni DiMaggio and Nick Schmidt won the heat races.
